Tuesday Movie Madness

#1 Post by Nomine » Sun Mar 15, 2020 9:06 pm

For the first shared viewing, we got the following movies for your careful consideration.
We will use discord to chat (temporary channel) and the movies are all free to stream on youtube.
In Discord there will be an announcement of "Start Now" :) So keeping it nice and simple.
First viewing 17.03- ca 20:00 server time.

Dick Tracy Meets Gruesome.
Dick Tracy being the famous pulp detective, and in this he is forced to tackle a villain who robs banks using a nerve gas (villan is played by legendary Boris Karloff - the original Frankenstein monster)
Action/Crime - from 1947

The Most Dangerous Game
An insane hunter arranges for a ship to be wrecked on an island where he can indulge in some sort of hunting and killing of the passengers.
This movie has been remade again and again, even in "The Hunt" the movie Trump blocked and that comes out in 2020. A truly legendary movie.
Action/Adventure - 1932

The Mad Monster
A monster movie which is at least as good as its title.... "A mad scientist changes his simple-minded handyman into a werewolf in order to prove his supposedly crazy scientific theories - and exact revenge."
Drama/Horror from 1942.

The General
A silent movie staring Buster Keaton - and it is a legendary classic silent movie comedy. When Union spies steal an engineer's beloved locomotive, he pursues it single-handedly and straight through enemy lines.
Buster Keaton is not as known as Charlie Chaplin, but the man suffered countless broken bones and was a genius.
Comedy - 1926.

The second viewing:
24.03.2020, start 20:00-20:05ish

For your consideration we have the following cinematic masterpieces, and you all get two votes!

Bubba Ho-Tep
John F. Kennedy and Elvis Presley are both residents at an Texas Nursing home (it will all make sense when you see the movie..) But that ought to be the least of your concerns once an ancient malevolent Egyptian entity shows up at the home to suck out the souls of the poor old geezers who live here. If this diabolical force is going to keep up his antics, he’ll have to get through Elvis.
It is weird, and a sort of slow burn comedic genius rather than slapstick- laugh-out fun.
Comedy - staring the great Bruce Campbell (My best choice for an actor that could play Nomine)

Sita Sings the Blues
This is a feature animated film entirely undertaken by one determined woman, featuring four distinctly different styles of animation and storytelling, to wrap together the narrative of her own life with the millennia-old Hindu myth cycle The Ramayana after she noted the similarities between her own story and that of the myth’s heroine, Sita. A focusing on relationships and duty, it’s also set to the 1920s jazz vocals of Annette Henshaw.
As an animation it is fairly simplistic, yet an incredible achievement.

The Lady Vanishes (1938 version)
This is a near perfect thriller, especially considering when it was made. Nothing here is without meaning, not a single shot - Which is part of Hitchcocks skill at shaving down movies to their most essential parts. the film follows a soon-to-be-married woman, Iris (Margaret Lockwood), who becomes tangled in the mysterious circumstances surrounding the titular lady’s disappearance aboard a packed train.
Thriller

The Living Wake.
This is pretty dark, incredibly sharp and satirical. Portraying the eccentric K. Roth Binew with an exaggerated Shakespearean delivery, O’Connell sets out to document his character’s last day on earth after being diagnosed with a vague terminal disease.
It is honestly, rather hard to explain why it is funny, it is special and one of those movies that should have made him more bankable in this modern word of ours.

Braindead
Gore-warnings up front. This is a splatter movie, it is also possibly one of the best depictions of New-Zeland living. It also raises the question - this is what made them give the director a fortune to film Lord of the rings...?!
A young man's mother is bitten by a Sumatran rat-monkey. She gets sick and dies, at which time she comes back to life, killing and eating dogs, nurses, friends, and neighbours. Being a splatter, there is violence, zombies, and a few hundred liters of blood.
Come for the dark humor, stay for the lawnmower scene.

For your consideration 31.03 - As always there is a clear theme, and you got two votes!

They Call Me Trinity
Spaghetti Western with Terence Hill and Bud Spencer, playing Trinity and Bambino, who help defend a Mormon settlement from Mexican bandits and the henchman of the land-grabbing Major Harriman. The movie plays with a lot of the same ideas and character types that made Clint Eastwood so famous as a western hero.
Comedy/Western
Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8dfQja43Ik

My Name is Nobody
This movie stars Terence Hill playing against the aging Henry Fonda. It is a variation of the character Trinity, but in serious take. Sergio Leone was one of the writers, and he is arguably the master of spagethi western, with a soundtrack by Morricone - which makes this this into a classic.
Jack Beauregard, once the greatest gunslinger of the Old West, only wants to move to Europe and retire in peace, but a young gunfighter, known only as "Nobody," idolizes him and wants to see him go out in a blaze of glory. He arranges for Jack to face the 150-man gang known as The Wild Bunch and earn his place in history.
Western

Emma - 2020
This is our first pirate or pay option. Jane Austen's beloved comedy about finding your equal and earning your happy ending, is reimagined in this. Handsome, clever, and rich, Emma Woodhouse is a restless queen bee without rivals in her sleepy little town. In this glittering satire of social class and the pain of growing up, Emma must adventure through misguided matches and romantic missteps to find the love that has been there all along.
It is available to rent from Amazon (your milage may vary)
Drama
Or download from here (You MUST download it in advance, it will not work to stream it)

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies
Our second pirate or pay option. The five highly trained Bennett sisters in Georgian England must try to protect themselves from the growing zombie threat, find suitable husbands for themselves, battle marriage proposals and unlikely suitors, and save the country before it's too late. It is fair to say it is losely based upon Jane Austens Pride and Prejudice, with glorious, if not historically accurate costumes.
Amazon and youtube both offers versions of this to pay for.
Horror comedy (light on horror elements)
Or download from here (You MUST download it in advance, it will not work to stream it)

List for 7th of April - As always you got two votes!

Red Sun.
I think the movie must have been named after the male machismo in this movie, I mean Charles Bronson and Toshiro Mifune in one and the same movie (Toshiro being the epitome of Japanese masculine hero aka 60-70s).
In 1870, a gang robs a train and steals a ceremonial Japanese sword meant as a gift from Japan to the U.S. President, prompting a manhunt to retrieve it. The ambassador's bodyguard (Toshiro Mifune) will go after them, with the aid of one of the gang's leaders betrayed by his pals..
Western - 1.52 min long.
Its from 1971 and I have not found it on any online service that has it, so it must be downloaded before watching.

Yojimbo
This is pretty much as iconic as you get - lone samurai enters a town thats torn apart by gang violence. Inspired a Fist Full of Dollars, countless hero vs opposition movies, and is perhaps one of Akira Kurosawas best work - at least within Samurai films. It is also the film that show what Toshiro Mifune`s mastery. (I figured fewer have seen this than Seven Samurai) - Mifune is pretty much the De Niro of his time.
From 1965 - Can be rented at Youtube, BFI player, Itunes, Amazon prime or my dropbox.

The Adventures of Robin Hood,
Errol Flynn is the OG flamboyant charming, daredevil - and here is he is in full force as Robin Hood (I picked this one, for being with both in color and with voice) It is also perhaps the best of all Robin Hood movies.
Available on multiple sources online, Daily motion for instance (Just be warned, there is a bit of adds before you come to the movie)
https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x41bpsr

The Princess Bride
No list would be complete without Princess Bride, after all "You killed my father. Prepare to die." Fun movie, amazing mustache.
An elderly man reads the book "The Princess Bride" to his sick and thus currently bedridden adolescent grandson, the reading of the book which has been passed down within the family for generations. The grandson is sure he won't like the story, with a romance at its core, he preferring something with lots of action and "no kissing". But the grandson is powerless to stop his grandfather, whose feelings he doesn't want to hurt. The story centers on Buttercup, a former farm girl who has been chosen as the princess bride to Prince Humperdinck of Florian. Buttercup does not love him, she who still laments the death of her one true love, Westley, five years ago. Westley was a hired hand on the farm, his stock answer of "as you wish" to any request she made of him which she came to understand was his way of saying that he loved her. But Westley went away to sea, only to be killed by the Dread Pirate Roberts. On a horse ride to clear her mind of her upcoming predicament of marriage, Buttercup
On Amazon, DirectTv, Netflix and youtube- etc, as well as from me.
Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GiMOO1t0tZQ&t=551s - This link also has optional english subtitles. (Search words: The princess Bride (1997) Arqam Tahir channel

Kill Bill volum 1
This movie is Tarantino´s homage to the Japanese samurai movies - it also stars some of the best female swordfighters in western movies (There is a nice sub-genera of female fighters in Japanese movies from the 70s)
The lead character, called 'The Bride,' was a member of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad, led by her lover 'Bill.' Upon realizing she was pregnant with Bill's child, 'The Bride' decided to escape her life as a killer. She fled to Texas, met a young man, who, on the day of their wedding rehearsal was gunned down by an angry and jealous Bill (with the assistance of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad). Four years later, 'The Bride' wakes from a coma, and discovers her baby is gone. She, then, decides to seek revenge upon the five people who destroyed her life and killed her baby.
Kill Bill is on Netflix, Amazon, Miramax, etc - your milage may wary. Best check in advance!

I do also have it available if needed.

Fallen Angels - by Wong-Kar-Wai
Wong-Kar-Wai is visually stunning director, his movies are layers upon layers, so this movie is one where full attention is required, and in return it is an amazing quirky world.
A disillusioned killer embarks on his last hit but first he has to overcome his affections for his cool, detached partner. Thinking it's dangerous and improper to become involved with a colleague he sets out to find a surrogate for his affections. Against the sordid and surreal urban nightscape of contemporary Hong Kong, he crosses path with a strange drifter looking for her mysterious ex-boyfriend and an amusing mute trying to get the world's attention in his own unconventional ways.
