Real life meet-up over a long weekend in Salisbury UK

#1 Post by Chit » Mon Oct 09, 2017 4:11 pm

Hi all,

I know there are some Terry Pratchett fans out there, and in Salisbury we currently have running this exhibition:
https://www.theguardian.com/books/2017/ ... -own-world

In addition, it is not too far from the Discworld Emporium so we might do a trip there.
https://www.discworldemporium.com/

For those not enamoured of Terry Pratchett (your host Chit among them!) there is lots to do including:
Salisbury's Christmas market - sort out some of your Christmas shopping!
View the best preserved original Magna Carta
The oldest working clock in the world
Climb up above the ceiling on the Cathedral spire
Visit all of Salisbury's secret tea rooms with a native guide
Visit the only cinema in a medieval hall - wear coats and hats as central heating is not allowed due to being Grade II listed!

Come for 1 day or 4, it's up to you. We have a couple of beds, but a large house and plenty of floor space and mattresses. I can probably pick people up from London or Southampton airports.

People I know are interested so far are Lylieth (Dan), Karina (Donna), Tikal (Mike), Etaine (Rikke). Nomine (Kai) may also be coming. If you are nervous of meeting people irl, don't worry - we all were first time, and everyone has always said they were glad they felt the fear and did it anyway!

We always have a quiet space for sitting and reading and a noisy space for socialising, so introverts are made very welcome.

I am missing the actual date?
Or am I just misreading :)

Oh, on the risk of being beheaded...I've never read Pratchett 'cept one chapter after which I had to conclude I liked Douglas Adams better.
But that might still change :) It's been a while :P

There is a Doodle poll to decide on which weekend in December!

Sign up which dates you can make, and comment on whether you are likely to come, and I'll line up the best date.

Oh and just for info, I'm thinking of doing another summer meetup in 2018, if you need to budget your resources.

The food and petrol costs are likely to be £12 a day based on last time.

Syra it's easy for you, I can pick you up at Southampton airport, there are direct flights there from Amsterdam.

Ah darn it :( I no longer have the mondays off, so I can't make it any weekend at the moment. I'd not survive the work week after.

I'll have to skip. Hoping to have that gallbladder surgery soon so I can heal up, have more energy and put my money on the summer when after all there is such a thing as summer vacation in the Netherlands.

Thanks for organizing, though :)

I am not allowed to take days off in December... :-(
“Auri," I asked slowly, "are you joking with me?"
She looked up and grinned. "Yes I am," she said proudly. "Isn't it wonderful?”

I am hoping that tomorrow I can find out for definite if I will need to restrict which dates I can go or not. But if I have to make it a shorter trip, then I will unfortunately have to (need to sign at the job centre obviously dictates when I can or can't go.)
